Peterson’s Guides to Graduate Programs. These guides are rarely comprehensive or totally objective because departments must pay to be included. Peterson’s Guides are available on-line.

National Research Council Survey. Research Doctorate Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change. 1995. Marvin L. Goldberger, Brendan A. Maher, and Pamela Ebert Flattau, editors; Committee for the Study of Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States. This volume is the most recent edition of results of surveys conducted by the National Research Council which evaluates and ranks Ph.D. programs in each discipline. The results are publicized widely. Several Duke libraries include the volume in their collections.

Directories of Graduate Programs. These directories are published by the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Board and the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS). They are organized in several volumes with nearly comprehensive lists of degree programs and institutions by field of degree although the information is not as user-friendly as that on individual web sites. The GRE/CGS Directories are available in the Reference Section of Perkins Library, the Office of Pre-Graduate Study Advising and in the Career Center Library.
